Is Lymphatic Massage Therapy a cost effective treatment?

Lymphatic massage, also known as lymphatic drainage, is a technique developed in Germany for treatment of lymphedema. Although lymphedema can be present at birth or develop in adulthood, it often occurs when lymph nodes are surgically removed or damaged by radiation for conditions such as cancer. Manual lymphatic drainage is demonstrated to be a safe technique without known side effects. The major concern with incorporating MLD into the treatment of patients with cases of lymphedema, is the cost-benefit. Namely, is the added cost of providing manual lymphatic drainage worth the potentially small improvement in limb volume?

Some practioners, including ourselves, believe that any improvement, even a small one at that, is important, as having a larger volume of swelling for longer durations causes proportionally greater damage.
